American Idol – Top 8 Men

This is just the strangest season.  Front runners fall way behind.  The judges love the Karaoke kid.  And the two singers most likely to fade into obscurity after the first week are now dark horses.  There’s certainly no Crystal Bowersox among the guys, but Big Mike will give her a run for her money with his meathead appeal.

Lee Dewyze – “Fireflies” – Owl City
Look.  This dude is a good singer.  If I went to karaoke with him, I would enjoy his performances.  If he were to front a band performing in a random bar, I would enjoy his performance.  But WTF with the judges thinking he has such talent?  He’s no David Cook.  He’s no Chris Daughtry.  I still don’t get him.  But he was good.

Alex Lambert – “Trouble” – Ray LaMontagne
Risky choice for a song.  This song has been so played out on Idol.  But I thought he brought an interesting take to it.  He’s definitely getting better every week, and I really like his voice.  But dude really, really has to do something about the mullet.

Tim Urban – “Hallelujah” – Jeff Buckley
Oh no.  Really?  He’s going to do this song after Jason Castro’s amazing version a couple of seasons ago?  Actually, kid is not so bad.  I didn’t know his voice was actually so strong.  Is this really the same person who had that horrific performance two weeks ago?  Wow.  This kid could actually make the top 12.  He sounded good, he’s growing, and every tweenage girl will be in love with him.

Andrew Garcia – “Genie In A Bottle” – Christina Aguilera
“Genie in a Bottle” was no “Straight Up”.  He did peak so early.  What’s going on, Andrew.  You have most definitely lost your front-runner status.

Casey James – “You’ll Think Of Me” – Keith Urban
Definitely his most eh performance to date.  Kara was right.  “Missing that spark.”  He’ll sail through to the top 12 despite a last note that was completely out of tune.

Aaron Kelly – “I’m Already There” – Lone Star
Alternately gross and strong.  But who is this kid?  And why is he wearing the outfit he wears to the mall?

Todrick Hall – “Somebody To Love” – Queen
One of my favorite songs of all time.  Certainly his best performance to date, but that song is HUGE, and I thought he was just small.  Randy said “Todrick is back,” which I have to believe indicates that the real Todrick is pretty mediocre.

Big Mike – “This Woman’s Work” – Maxwell
Very interesting song choice.  He definitely sounded good.  I want to like this guy, but he likes himself so much that there is no room for me to like him.  Have to admit though, he was good.

My Ranking of Tonight’s Performances

  1. Big Meathead Mike
  2. Carol Brady
  3. Tim Urban
  4. Lee Dewyze
  5. Casey James
  6. Andrew Garcia
  7. Aaron Kelly
  8. Todrick Hall

Who Should Go Home This Week:
Todrick Hall and Aaron Kelly.  Thanks for playing.

Who Will Go Home This Week:
Todrick Hall and Aaron Kelly.  Unless Andrew Garcia’s fan base has eroded along with his performances.

One last thing – please explain to me what is happening with Kara this year.  On the one hand, she has adopted Simon’s dead-on critiques.  On the other hand, she has adopted Paula’s hanging on Simon and overwrought emotionality.  What was with her sobbing after Big Mike’s performance?  She said she was so moved because clearly he so respects what his wife is going through as a new mom.  Need I remind you, Kara, that Big Mike chose American Idol auditions over being with her as he gave birth to her first child, or that he delivered the news that her water broke with the same level of excitement one would say “it’s a couple of blocks down on the left”?

New Feature – American Idol Hall of Fame
To get myself through this dismal Idol season, I need to remind myself why I became so addicted to this show in the first place.  So I’m going to start featuring some of my favorite performances.  Here’s a great one from Jordin Sparks in Season 6 that was a game-changer for her.  Is there anyone with raw talent like this this season?

Maxwell did the cover of Big Mike’s song. This Woman’s Work was written and first performed by one of my all time favorites, Kate Bush. We agree with your assessment sir.

I was wondering who did it first. I had never heard Maxwell’s version, but I figured that she covered him, since they said Maxwell was the original singer.
