American Idol Recap – Top 5 Performances

I wanted to alternately title today’s post “The-Week-When-Any-Conclusion-Other-Than-Hollie-Going-Home-Is-Absurd.”  But dang her.  She may have timed her arc just right.  Tonight’s themes are “The 60’s” and “Brit Pop”.  Steve Van Zant, who will be forever known as Silvio to me, is today’s guest coach.  Love it.

Hollie – “River Deep, Mountain High” by Tina Turner
There is little chance that this woman can disappoint at this point in the competition, since expectations are so low.  I hate to say it, but this may have been her best performance so far.  Fun and care-free.  Standing-O from Steven and Randy.  Gotta give her some props.

Phillip – “The Letter” by The Box Tops
Perfect song for PhilPhil.  And boy did he change it up.  Mr. American Idol 2012 has won me back over.  One complaint: the band was too freaking loud.  Randy loved it.  JLo has never heard the song but has the hots for PhilPhil.  Steven, as everyone, missed the melody, but points out quite fairly that PhilPhil gets away with it.  OH-NO-HE-DIDN’T: Ryan points out that PhilPhil has a girlfriend and she is in the house.  Most hated woman in America.

Skylar – “Fortunate Son” by Credence Clearwater Revival
LOVE THIS WOMAN.  Not sure why the Jacobs household doesn’t.  I mean, Country isn’t my genre, but I couldn’t care less.  She is a burgeoning talent.  If Lauren Alaina had been in this year’s competition, she would have been voted out immediately, as Skylar would have received ALL of the Country vote.

Joshua and Phillip – “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”
Bizarre pairing.  But it just makes me love PhilPhil even more, because surprisingly, he did not disappear next to the far superior vocalist.  No question America will prefer mister chill next to Joshua’s (always impressive) vocal gymnastics.  Not to mention PhilPhil’s awesome sense of humor.  “Match made in heaven,” Steven says.

Jessica – “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner
WOW.  What a huge choice to tackle.  Who doesn’t know Tina Turner’s version of this song?  Impossible not to have that in the back of one’s mind.  Jessica’s controlled, girly energy was truly different from Tina’s gut-wrenching, crazy-energetic performance.  If Tina’s version didn’t exist, she would have been worshiped for this one.  No question – she is a way better singer than Tina Turner.  But she can’t match Tina Turner for showmanship, and I fear it may hurt her.

Joshua – “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” by The Temptations
I am seriously having Fantasia redux feelings here.  This guy has the same timeless talent.  Amazing.  What an amazing version of the song.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let the people who manage this guy’s career be different than the ones who have managed Fantasia’s career.  I am so pleased that Joshua has made it this far and blossomed.  This guy deserves success.

Hollie – “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis
Why Why Why did you have to go and actually incorporate the feedback and prove yourself when the only people left are people I do not want to see go home?  Dang.  I suppose I should thank you for showing that the final five are all very deserving.  Randy said it the best.  She is the dark horse and she is peaking at just the right time.

PhilPhil – “Time Of The Season” by The Zombies
Doesn’t matter that there was nothing special about this or that it was the thinnest vocal of the night and perhaps of the season – no pun intended.  The shot of PhilPhil staring into the camera muttering “What’s your name?  Who’s your daddy?  Is he rich like me?” will drive millions of votes and cemented his victory in this competition.

Jessica, Skylar, and Hollie – “Higher and Higher” by Jackie Wilson

Skylar – “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” by Dusty Springfield
I believe you, Skylar.  I really do.  I am so rooting for you.  Confident, poised, strong, powerful.

Jessica – “You Are So Beautiful” by Joe Cocker
Jessica takes a page out of the Fantasia Barrino handbook and performs spread out on the floor.  She sounds beautiful.  Ah, Jessica.  you peaked too early.

Joshua – “To Love Somebody” by The Bee Gees
Slayed it.  JLo thinks Joshua is one of the best singers she has seen in 50 years.

My Ranking Of Tonight’s Performances:

  1. Joshua – “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”/”To Love Somebody” – I can’t choose.
  2. Hollie – “Bleeding Love”
  3. Skylar – “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”
  4. Jessica – “You Are So Beautiful”
  5. Skylar – “Fortunate Son”
  6. Hollie – “River Deep, Mountain High”
  7. Jessica, Hollie, & Skylar
  8. The Heir Apparent – “The Letter”
  9. Jessica – “Proud Mary”
  10. Joshua & Phillip
  11. PhilPhil – “Time Of The Season”

Who’s Going Home?

Jessica.  I can’t believe I am saying this, but it’s Jessica.  Who deserves to go home is PhilPhil, but he won’t even appear in the bottom three.  Skylar and Hollie will likely round out the bottom three and either could be in jeopardy of going home, but I think that in terms of the narrative arc, Jessica peaked way too soon.  And I hate to admit it, but Hollie earned herself another week.

Eileen and I agree with you that Jessica is going home. We think all 3 women will be in the bottom 3

Well I really enjoyed reading it. This subject offered by you is very practical for accurate planning.
